THE TATE, ARTIST IMPRESSION.
Lisa Jennings
Principal, Woods Bagot.
“Like all the buildings at Scotch Hill Gardens, The Tate took its inspiration from the classic period homes that you see around Hawthorn in a range of ways.
Archways made of brick, that have the confidence and presence at the street front, were really important to us. The archways are also a useful device to help frame the views for entry, and also the outlook to landscape. We enjoyed incorporating these overt and subtle references to the surrounding area and what’s been on site before – interpreted in a very sophisticated and gentle way.
There’s also a kind of scribing of the brickwork in that building, which is very reminiscent in classic detailing. It hints at a relationship to a beautiful colonnade that might conjure a visual reference to the University of Melbourne, a former custodian of the site.”
